Why These Anime Are My Top Favorite

Hey fellow geeks,

You ever stumble across an anime that hits just right? Not just in story, but in vibes, music, art, and how it all blends into something unforgettable? That’s how I feel about the anime that shaped my taste—and if you’re into style-heavy, genre-bending, character-driven series with a dose of grit and heart, you’ll probably vibe with this list too.

Let me break down why these shows are permanently bookmarked in my geek brain:

01

Cowboy bebop

Genre: Space Western / Noir
Vibe: Cool jazz + broken dreams
Why It Slaps:
From the jump I was hooked on this show.  I think it was the music being played during the hight energy action sequences matched with the kung fu fighting.  I love jazz, I love funk and this show has a great way of blending the soundtrack by Yoko Kanno with the various scenes in the show.

Perfect for: Late-night chill sessions and existential dread

“See you, space cowboy…”

02

Samurai Champloo

Genre: Historical Hip-Hop
Vibe: Edo-period meets turntables
Why It Slaps:
I love the Unique mix of samurai culture and hip-hop, with a dash of the lo-fi vibes in some of the more quieter scenarios in the show. You get to see this perfecly imperfect relationships and chemistry between them which makes for probably one of the best trios in anime history. Hip hop heads will appreciate the incredible fight choreography synced to beats, but in my opinion the show’s intro song does a excellent job of selling the show before the first episode starts.

Perfect for: When you want to feel cool watching anime.

03

Space Dandy

Genre: Sci-fi Comedy / Anthology
Vibe: Absurd, colorful chaos
Why It Slaps:Not that I do acid or anything, but if I did this would be the perfect show to watch whilst tripping out.  It’s very colorful and warpy, but I like it because it breaks the rules of regular story telling and visuals.

Perfect for: Late-night chill sessions and silly story telling and trippy vibes and visuals.

04

The Big O

Genre: Mecha Noir
Vibe: Batman: The Animated Series meets Evangelion
Why It Slaps: If you can find it streaming, more power to you. If, like me, you are a fan of Batman the animated series from the ’90s, you love the tone, the simplistic archictectual art and that sort of liminial space feel it gives, then you’ll love The Big O.  It does a good job of blending a Bruce Wayne, James Bond, and Spike Spiegel all into one guy.  He even has his own Alfred.  But this show’s biggest [no pun intended] character is the giant mech he controls to fight the bad guys some of whom have their own mech to make things a bit challenging for our hero.

Perfect for: Dark, stormy nights.

05

Bubblegum Crisis

Genre: Cyberpunk / 80’s Retro
Vibe: Blade Runner meets MTV
Why It Slaps:Neo Tokyo, synths, and cyberpunk girl power. If you like 80s aesthetics and Blade Runner vibes, this one’s for you. It’s stylish, gritty, and the music absolutely rips. It’s a pure cyberpunk gem before cyberpunk became a buzzword.

Perfect for: If you are a fan of Ghost in the Shell or Akira this one you’ll definitely enjoy.

06

Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-ne

Genre: Historical Hip-Hop
Vibe: Cutsie, Feminie, Bubbly, Vibes with Mechs
Why It Slaps:
It’s got heart, soft sci-fi, and a beautifully emotional core. Mecha meets slice-of-life, with a calmness that’s hard to describe but easy to sink into.

Perfect for: Sunday afternoon decompress, I guess.

07

Cannon Busters

Genre: Afro-futuristic Adventure
Vibe: Hip-hop fantasy with a Saturday morning twist
Why It Slaps:This one’s pure Saturday morning adventure energy with a hip-hop soul. Think Trigun meets Afro Samurai with a diverse cast and fun world-building. Philly the Kid and Sam have that unlikely buddy duo dynamic that just works.

Perfect for: Fans of Trigun, Outlaw Star.

08

Michiko & Hatchin

Genre: Road Trip Drama
Vibe: Latin American grit meets anime soul
Why It Slaps:
Brazilian-flavored road trip with a rebellious spirit. Michiko is like a female Spike Spiegel, and Hatchin is the grounded, no-nonsense kid keeping her in check. The art, the soundtrack, the setting—it all feels raw and real.

Perfect for: When you want to feel cool watching anime.

09

The Boondocks & Black Dynamite

Genre: Satire / Action / Conscious
Vibe: Martial arts meets social commentary
Why It Slaps: I had to put thest two together. Do I really have to go into why? If you are black and love anime and haven’t heard or worst yet haven’t seen a single episode of any one of these shows it’s because you’ve been living under a rock or you simply don’t want to watch. Either way, shame on you, tisk tisk.
The Boondocks blends satire, social commentary, and martial arts slickness like no other. Black Dynamite? A ridiculous, over-the-top, kung-fu blaxploitation trip that embraces its absurdity. Both are iconic in their own right.

Perfect for: Watching with your bruvs, and reciting some of the catchy and funny lines from the shows.

10

One Punch Man

Genre: Action / Satire
Vibe: Shonen… with a punchline
Why It Slaps:
What if Superman had an existential crisis and was addicted to grocery store deals? Saitama is the most overpowered underdog in anime history, and the satire of shonen tropes is pure genius. Plus, that exagerated animation style during action sequences.

Perfect for: When you want to see how how the bad guy gets lit up and laugh along the way.

11

Lupin the 3rd

Genre: Heist / Adventure
Vibe: Oceans 11 meets Snatch meets Bugs Bunny
Why It Slaps:The OG gentleman thief. Lupin’s been around for decades, but he never loses his charm. Whether it’s the jazzy 70s/80’s Japanese City Pop music or the sleek modern films, it’s always fun, stylish, and smarter than it lets on.

Perfect for: Vintage fans and goofy heist lovers.

12

Lazarus

Genre: Sci-Fi / Action Thriller
Vibe: Neon-drenched future meets philosophical chaos
Why It Slaps:
New anime in town, Lazarus blends high-stakes sci-fi with breathtaking fight choreography, all wrapped in a slick, stylish aesthetic, thanks to the powerhouse team of Shinichirō Watanabe and Studio MAPPA. It’s a philosophical thrill ride that feels like Cowboy Bebop, Afro Samurai, and The Big O had a neon-lit, end-of-the-world baby.

Perfect for: Fans of stylish world-ending stakes and cerebral combat, and of course Kamasi Washington on the score.
